It never left whenever a new dance comes out with a different
style of Hip Hop it gets endlessly shytted on.

For examples see :
Crumping/Clowning
Jerking
Snap dancing
Hyphy
Etc.

Most of it is seen as or becomes just a fad.
The more sophisticated and/or entertaining stuff
seems to get incorporated into break dancing or put
into a larger move set in urban dance.
Then the public moves on.

The Wrong Side of the Tracks
The reason it 'left' is because a majority of the music now doesn't encourage people to dance. Just mean mug, pop mollies, fukk bytchez and bust gunz.

Meanwhile, back in 1988......
