There's no money in reporting the facts. There's money in reporting the exceptions. Continuously watching news which shows
exceptional circumstances can re-wire your brain to perceive the world as being more hostile than it is. Especially if you live in a suburb
away from the cities that are apparent war zones.
There's a name for it. It's called Mean World Syndrome

And it is the bread and butter of privately owned news companies(aka most of them) and politicians(ESPECIALLY republicans) and their counterparts in other parts of the world. They need you to believe the world is getting worse, and the only way to fix it is to give them more money(either by continuing to watch private news/pay for a subscription or by donating to the political campaign of someone who's going to "kill the woke mind virus" or "fight donald trump" by sending him strongly worded letters and doing silent protests at work or whatever).
The people who actually live in these areas know who is causing trouble and how to avoid them and they've been actively working on solving these problems either with local police departments or local non-profits who redirect young people who are susceptible to falling into a life of crime because they believe thats the only way they can ever have some economic stability and experience basic dignity, respect, and a sense of belonging to a family that will have their back.
