El Chapo injured while evading capture: Mexican officials
Mexico’s most-wanted drug lord injured his leg and his face as he narrowly evaded capture, government officials said late Friday.
Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the boss of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel, has been on the run since he busted out of a maximum security prison cell in July.
State officials said they recently closed in on Guzman in northwestern Mexico, but provided no further details about when or where the operation took place.
Authorities believe the 58-year-old kingpin was injured as he fled from officials, but the alleged wounds were “not a product of a direct clash,” Mexico said in a statement without elaborating further. They did not say how severely he was hurt.
Guzman escaped the Mexican prison in July by sneaking out of a masterfully built, mile-long tunnel that connected his cell shower to freedom. An intense manhunt was underway for the drug lord, who is estimated to be worth more than $1 billion.
Days after his brazen breakout, Guzman was pictured sipping a beer and flying in a private plane in taunting photos released by his son.
The July jailbreak was the second time Guzman escaped prison. He spent 12 years on the lam after he broke free in 2001 while serving a 20-year sentence in another Mexican maximum security prison. His 2014 capture was hailed as a major victory for President Enrique Peña Nieto’s crackdown on cartels.
