Another day, another food exposé that manages to change our perspective of a seemingly harmless ingredient. Today, the spotlight has been turned on none other than vegetable oil. A staple in nearly every American kitchen, this seed-based cooking oil has since been exposed as a cancer-causing agent when heated in a frying pan or wok, according to a study published in Science Direct.

Containing high amounts of polyunsaturated and omega-6 fats, these inexpensive oils—made from seeds including canola, sunflower, corn, safflower, grape, rice bran, and soy—actually “release neurotoxic, DNA mutating chemicals which are known to cause cancer” when combined with oxygen, according to My Body+Soul.

“Recent improvements in measurement technology have now thrown a spotlight on the quantity of these chemicals released by normal use [of vegetable oils,” writes My Body+Soul’s David Gillespie, author of The Eat Real Food Cookbook. “When seed oils containing these fats are heated at a normal cooking temperature (of 180 degrees celsius), they create highly toxic chemicals known to be involved in cancer causation.” This explains the sheer amount of lung cancer cases among women in Asian countries. While few of these women smoke, many of them spend their days cooking with canola oil, both at home and during work hours.

hmmmm people in 3rd world country live like this and cancer is a very low stat there ... now diabetes and high-cholesterol/heart-related issues on the other hand

Take all this with a grain of salt(no pun).
But nutrition science is all over the place
It's all about balance...people don't get that

The shyt we know now is the shyt most people have known for decades

It's not that you can't have sugar/fat/carbs/red meat/etc/., it's that we have too much of it

anyone eating vegetable oil should probably find something else. A costco membership, coconut & avacado oils probably is the best thing going these .

But about the say we have with our choices - looking at those oils, avocado and coconut, they both come from trees. Fields for vegetable oil and annual crops have to be plowed, seeded, fertilized, sprayed every year, remain uncovered and unprotected in winter which causes massive top soil loss (the biggest US export by weight) and is replaced by ammonia and other salt based garbage. Then the GMO issue to top it off. Trees provide habitat, increase soil fertility, have a fraction of the maintenance.

shyt started going south for humans when we started getting the bulk of our food form annual crops. Open invitation to anyone to try and get off annual grains & fats for a month and see if you aren't addicted to them - corn, wheat, oats vegetable oil, rice, throw potatoes in there too. Those plants have used us to take over the planet in a weird way.
