2 girls and they get along like I'm Lou Will
Not an old head. Not a hater. People criticized the soundcloud/early melodic rap era from like 2012--2016 but honestly, amongst a sea of shyt you found a lot of guys who were at least trying to do something unique sonically (Uzi, Carti, Future, Thug, XXXtentacion, JuiceWRLD, Fetty Wap, Kodak, Travis, 21 Savage, Tory Lanez) even if they weren't necessarily the best "pure" rappers (actually JuiceWRLD could really fukking rap but that's besides the point.) None of those dudes sound like eachother, whatsoever.
This current crop of guys though? I guess you'd call this era the "street" wave? Lil Baby? Polo G? Nardo Wick? Roddy? Rod Wave? The entire new 1017? Can you tell any of their shyt apart? All using the same tired ass, uninspired "gritty" street production that is most prevalent in Lil Baby's music. A beat backed by a tired ass piano melody, or acoustic guitar, or flute. Sometimes all 3. The beats all sound the same. And aren't even nice to listen to. The bars all sound the same. They all either sound like refined, but less creative versions of Thug when they rap. Or like they're just flat out bored/special ed (Pooh Sheisty I'm looking at you.)
These guys don't even attempt to form unique personas or at least be "out there" in terms of their image, the way guys like Uzi, Carti, Kodak, and XXX were. It's like a factory is just churning out all these generic ass nikkas and for some reason they're thriving.
Roddy in particular is the most annoying. This dumb ass nikka made a hit like "The Box", which was an incredibly unique song soncially that was so addictive it organically rose up the charts and dominated the air waves. He saw that, and what does he do? Take 2 years off to basically make a Lil Baby/Polo G album. It's like it completely flew over his head what made his last shyt so successful
I've never wanted a wave in rap to end quicker. The music is so fukking uninspired right now. Of all of them, Baby is probably the most listenable. He actually has some songs that at least bang when you're tryna get lit. But just from a principals standpoint, these nikkas gotta go.
EDIT: Ironically, one guy this era who's actually "different" is DaBaby. His sound is very uniquely his, even if you don't like his music. But he actually seems to get the most hate of all the Gen Z guys. Which shows exactly what the problem is.
