I can agree with this interview. I think he uderrated Illmatics influence on other artists though.

But yeah, Illmatic is most definitely a snapshot of the early 90s NY projects.

Thats about as good of an explanation as you will get.

But yea, the mix of a high crime urban area with a music scene like NYC will probably never happen again. All the high crime areas now are just warzones with zero creative energy

70's and 80's babies just grew up with a better music scene and back then ny actually had a music scene and now a days we don't. They grew up on soul/funk classics, early hip hop etc. The new gen def has creative energy but they seem to be making other music or moving out or just not caring because there's no real influences anymore and you could say the same with any hood.
