The more things change, the more the minimum wage stays the same.

At $7.25 per hour, to be exact.

Lawmakers set a new record Sunday by leaving the federal minimum wage untouched since July 24, 2009, the first year of former President Barack Obama’s first term. The rate hasn’t been increased from $7.25 in a whopping 3,615 days, making it the longest dry spell since the federal minimum wage was enacted under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1938.

That surpasses a previous milestone set between 1997 and 2007, when then-President George W. Bush signed minimum wage legislation. Obama, stymied by Republicans on Capitol Hill, became the first president since Ronald Reagan to not put a pen to a minimum wage bill throughout his tenure.

Even though the federal wage floor has remained the same, its purchasing power has fallen since 2009 due to the rising cost of living.

Groups calling for a higher wage floor said Congress just earned an embarrassing distinction. Business for a Fair Minimum Wage called it a “terrible milestone,” saying “lawmakers need to listen and act now.”

The federal minimum wage prevails in any state that doesn’t mandate a higher one. While Congress and the White House have left it alone for nearly a decade, more and more states have opted to hike their rates on their own, either through legislation or the ballot box. Now a majority of states have a higher wage floor than $7.25, with some now on a trajectory to $15.

But the federal minimum wage currently reigns in 21 states. While many of those states have relatively lower costs of living, Democrats have said the federal rate needs to rise because $7.25 per hour isn’t enough to survive on anywhere, including in rural areas.

There’s no mystery as to why the federal minimum wage hasn’t gone up in nearly a decade: in recent years Republicans have controlled either the House, the Senate or the White House, or all three. Democrats had full control of the government at the start of Obama’s first term, but the increases approved under Bush had just been phased in ― and the economy was in the tank ― so most Democrats chose not to pursue one.

The current fight a joke imo :manny:
$15/hr was something in 2010... in 2020 its meaningless to densely populated states(CA/NY/TX etc.) and may do more harm to good in the states with struggling economies(Kansas:lolbron:).

Should just abolish it and mimic euro conquering Germany and others with stronger private sector unions.:yeshrug:

I assume that if CEOs are paying their employees 15/hr voluntarily, then passing a law doing so will be much easier. GOP wanting to outsource everything is a problem Warren is trying to solve.

My first job at 17 years old back in 2007 had a wage of $7.50 an hour (at a Taco Bell inside a mall).

Minimum Wage was like $5.85 and the Democrats had took Congress the year before and passed the last minimum wage increase. :damn:

My first wage job was back in 2002 and I was getting paid $8.75 per hour. Da fukk people expect to get by getting paid under $20 an hour when the year 2020 is coming? :wtf:

Minumum wage is a joke.

The United States economy has been built on the backs of cheap labor from the uneducated and minorities.

People profit from keeping you uneducated and broke. Why pay you $20 plus an hour when they can get the same labor for 8-12 dollars an hour.

The companies can turn more profit and keep these CEOs and business owners wealthy. They can then furthermore pour their money into supporting politicians that push agendas aimed towards keeping you broke and them wealthy.

Some that don't have a college degree or didn't learn a trade turn to streets hustles, because after all regardless of your economic situation we all like nice things. Minimum wage isn't buying you anything nice.

Then people find themselves caught up in the streets and one way or another you get caught up if that's a lifestyle you are trying to sustain. The street life is not sustainable long-term.

Law enforcement catches up to you now you jamed up with a record and depending on the severity of your offense you might lose your right to vote, get certain jobs, run for political office etc. further hampering your tools in helping yourself and your community.

The smartest thing you can do is have multiple streams of income and to go into business for yourself eventually.

Or, even better, fight TOGETHER AS A SOCIETY and get laws passed so that the quality of living will drastically increase. That selfish individualism shyt is how, these wealthy crooks get away with such things. We need to work together in a progressive movement like those European countries in order to become a true first world country again.

Caps on rent would phase out the need for frequent minimum wage increases. This country is so slow to focus on what really matters.

Bu bu bu it's the illegals keeping us poor. Nah it's not illegals charging you 1100 for rent when it used to be 800. Illegals disn't screw up the tax code.
