Black Executives Hold Few Positions That Lead to CEO Job

A lack of black executives in the jobs that most often lead to the C-suite risks leading to an even greater decline in African American chief executives, a new study finds.

Fewer than 10% of senior executives in so-called “profit and loss jobs,” those that operate units, at the largest U.S. companies are black, according to an analysis by executive recruiter Korn Ferry. The study was conducted for the Executive Leadership Council, which advocates for promotion of black executives into the top executive ranks and boardrooms

Black executives surveyed also say they’re pushed into supporting roles and have to take on riskier assignments to get promotions.

“The disproportionate number of people who happen to be black who are in support roles versus P&L is dramatically out of balance,” said Michael Hyter, a Korn Ferry managing partner and one of the authors of the study. “The black executive seems to be numerically in decline compared to all the other groups.”

As big investors such as BlackRock and State Street Global Advisors have been pushing companies to add more women to boards, fewer initiatives have focused on people of color. European countries pushing gender quotas for corporate boards, and a new California law setting minimum numbers, force companies to find more women to beat regulatory penalties. There are no regulatory requirements to add people of color in the boardroom or c-suite.

The last all-male board in the S&P 500 added a woman this year and women make up 24% of directors and about 5% of CEOs. Black directors made up only about 1% of board members in the S&P 500, and 37% of boards did not have a single black member, according to an analysis by Black Enterprise magazine. About 1% of S&P 500 CEOs are black. Interim Bed, Bath & Beyond Inc. CEO Mary Winston, who had been the only black, female CEO in the Fortune 500 since her appointment in May, will step down Nov. 4.

“In the circles I’m in there is absolutely a greater focus on gender, and I don’t begrudge that,” as long as black candidates are also getting equal consideration, said Skip Spriggs, CEO of the Executive Leadership Council and a former top human resources executive at TIAA, Boston Scientific Corp., and Cigna Corp. He said in his own career he was steered toward HR roles, which while important and influential, were less likely to earn him a CEO job.

Black executives who did get operating jobs said they faced headwinds such as pre-conceived notions of their abilities and exclusion from corporate social circles, according to the study, presented Thursday at the Executive Leadership Council’s CEO GameChanger conference in Washington. They also said they were asked to take on disproportionately risky projects, which had a high likelihood of failure, to prove their abilities.

“A lot of time that activity at the bottom tends to dominate the discussion,” said Hyter from Korn Ferry. “Where it really counts the most is black people who are in position for significant P&L responsibility.”

:manny: This is why diversity & Inclusion is really a farce. These companies aren’t putting black people in real positions to make a difference.

At the end of the day its foolish to think that "others" are going to put you in charge of their companies.

Think about it, if you spent decades building up a company, lost sleep, friends, relationships, etc. Just to put your company on the map, would you just turn control of it over to some white man?

Unless you're a c00n of the uncle ruckus variety, probably not.

For better or worse you're going to go with someone you can relate to, who reminds you of yourself.

That's why I talk so much about self awareness. Most black people would be furious if the government stepped in and forced you to hire Mexicans and Indians to be the head of your company if you had one.

But black men have become so feminized and wrapped themselves up into the role of perpetual victim, that we beg and plead for other people to behave in ways we wouldn't if we had the power. And the masculine competitive spirit has been beaten out of us so badly, we don't even consider putting in the work to put ourselves in the position of leadership.

The few who still have that spirit, we have to nitpick and come up with any justification to explain away or discredit their achievements.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, we really have to take a look at the toxic culture of black America.

Truth!

I always ask, can the landscaper go into his clients home and tell him how to furnish it?

Yeah we built the country but we didn’t build the rules.

I’ll say it again, blackness isn’t a monolith.

I get why people are dismissing the article. We can't expect companies created by whites to hire us to run them.

However........these companies don't discriminate when it comes to using our dollars for investments, buying their goods etc. Many of the top companies have no problem hiring blacks and other PoC. If you look at the corporate structure of most large firms, the bottom of the pyramid is full of blacks, Latinos, Asians, women etc. Each step you move up the mountain, the company gets less and less diverse. You might call it a corporate 'snow-capped mountain.'

I guess we could decide not to buy products from virtually every major American company. Or....we could push to see more representation at companies that already hire us but block our advancement.

A lot of the big firms struggle BECAUSE they lack diversity in leadership. Everyone in the C-suite thinks the same and looks the same. There's no one around to shake things up. May not seem like a big deal until you realize that 6-certs, 6 figs breh has investments in the stock market and his portfolio is lagging because all the McCorporations he's betting on are getting less than ideal returns from the same 99% white male board/C-level execs that get passed around from company to company. This shyt can affect even the most pro-black of brehs in ways we don't think about.

When they don't hire us, it can affect your pocket-book....even if you own your own business.
