Proves to me once again that Hip Hop "battles" are ABSOLUTELY useless...
There is VERY little objectivity in the fan base...Rapper A's fans will always think he is the winner, and Rapper B's fans will always think he is the winner, and the rest of the fans will just carry on doing whatever they are doing and not give a single f-ck...
Ultimately, the winner is the dude with the loudest fan base and industry momentum...It has NOTHING to do with "lyrics"...How can it, when the word "lyrical" itself is marinading in subjective opinions...?
Basically, rappers with nothing to lose can engage, but the ones who have to worry about a tainted reputation negatively affecting their money, they have ABSOLUTELY zero incentive to engage...
How can J Cole, Drake, Wale, Meek Mill and etc ever make another song with Kendrick Lamar, if they reply, and the fan base decides that their replies were not good enough (because it seems like the majority of the "fans" have already decided that no reply will ever be good enough)...
1) Hip Hop is too much of a million dollar business for any smart rapper to risk such potentially self-sabotaging move...Kendrick has the momentum now, to reply to his verse NOW, you will need a super brainwashing verse of your own, but if you wait until the heat dies down and you have the momentum, even a sub-par verse will be considered up to par or even better...That's how Hip Hop works...
2) In Hip Hop, the lines between reality and entertainment are BLURRED...Rappers may become/remain friends after a battle, but the fan base will NEVER forget...So, it's a trap for Kendrick Lamar to insinuate that he can challenge his peers in public, and still maintain the camaraderie...That's BULLSH+T...Hip Hop is not a sport like NBA, NFL or MLB...The fan base will have none of that...There is NO grey area...If you go, then you better blow, because the fan base wants to see an all out war, not girls pillow fighting at a slumber party...
My advice to rappers that were named (as I am sure their teams will advise them) is DO NOT respond...The risks outweigh the benefits...Let the heat die down, and throw subliminals here and there...That's NY's Blueprint, and it helped NY survive the DeathRow/Westcoast massacre...
