Cook with a Mouth
A Michigan man is under fire for allowing his 14-month-old daughter to roll around on the floor with a Burmese python. The video shows the snake and baby playing on the floor of the Saginaw, MI home. The snake being with the child like that has some people concerned.
The father of little Alyssa says that she was never in any danger. He has been handling snakes since he was 18, he assured critics. Jamie Guarino, whose other two daughters (3 and 10) grew up around snakes, told reporters:
“I was trying to show that snakes are not evil creatures, they can be a loving pet despite their bad reputation. When people see the way Nay-Nay is with Alyssa they mostly react with fear or negativity and I don’t understand why.”
Perhaps it has to do with the fact that, even though snakes are kept as pets, they are still wild animals and will behave like wild animals. No, they are not “evil” creatures. But, if a snake is hungry, it will look for the easiest prey. That could be — and has been — a baby.
In 2009, a Burmese python named Gypsy, escaped its enclosure (a 150-gallon glass aquarium with a quilt for the lid) and strangled 2-year-old Shaianna Hare in Florida. The 8 1/2 foot snake had not been fed in a month. The mother and her boyfriend were found guilty of third-degree murder, manslaughter and child abuse.
It happened again in Canada in August of 2013. Two young boys were killed as they slept by a 15-foot African Rock python. The python escaped its tank, entered the ventilation system and made its way to the room where the boys slept, where it fell onto the bed.
Since the video hit social media, people have been strongly divided on whether or not Guarino is putting his daughter in danger. Some examples:
PithTheCensors • “I think snakes are amongst the coolest of mother nature’s children. BUT what kind of idiot doesn’t realize that a 2-year-old kid is a Happy Meal for a constrictor??”
Sulla Felix • “I have a much larger python that the one in the video. I also had small children when I got him. Pythons are like other animals, if they are taken care of (fed, watered, petted) they are great pets to have. Just like any animal, if you mistreat them, they WILL respond in kind.”
Nathanael xxxx • “Can’t reason with them. They are Hell bent on calling him a terrible father and that all snakes need to be eradicated. If only they knew the medical advances being made with reptile venom and the conservation work being done by private individuals like myself. They are seriously coming up with an illogical scenario that would require the parent to already be a terrible parent. They fail to acknowledge the snake lives in a secure cage, the entire family was around and supervising, and that alternative pets can be amazing.”
As a snake lover, I know the attraction of a snake as a pet. I had a Ball Python for many years. Topaz was a hit at my daughter’s pre-school, where I showed the children that snakes are not slimy or nasty. It’s great to debunk myths and foster a love of all animals. But I would never allow a large Burmese python like this to “play” with a baby. I don’t believe Mr. Guarino – who has a great YouTube channel about snakes and reptiles — is an abusive parent. But I also know that even pet snakes still have wild instincts. I would never do what is depicted in the video.
