Because they only believe that backwardness and ignorance is what makes a place "Southern" or not. If a city is progressive, has good infrastructure or has a nice downtown area, folks start with that "it's not really the South" shyt.


I'm even starting to hear folks say it about Charleston and this is one of the oldest Southern cities in the damn country.

Yep I've had to deal with this in my adult life. Because I'm from the south people ask why I don't have a southern accent when they find out where I'm from. They dont understand the difference between a country ass motherfukker with a southerner. I try to explain this at my job sometimes but they don't understand lol.

In my opinion I feel like the bottom half of Virginia is the south to me. It’s a big difference between north Virginia and south Virginia. I work at a hotel in NJ on the weekends. I know a pilot that lives in country NC. This man views Charlotte the same way he views nyc.
