This was before takeover existed, by just a few months. As you already know, Nas & Jay had been throwing pot-shots at each other during the build-up to Takeover.

This verse by Nas is cold, probably one of the best of that battle, that very few people know about... :scusthov:

[Intro: Nas]
Yo this Nas nikkas whuttup?
QB Album coming, nikkas Ill Will, Bravehearts
My nikka DJ Clue - put this shyt on these nikkas
Desert Storm baby 2000!

[Nas]
A Drug dealers dream - flip his last Ki out the game
Cause entertainment money now is off the chain
I put blunts in nikkas caskets, lost in the game
I learned about pain, bodies burnt in drug game
But I'm neva gon' die, I neva heard of death
Energy could neva be destroyed
Only the flesh, when you nikkas try to murder me
With bullets to my head
This is my you can't kill me nikkas
I'm already dead, BRING IT!!
I'm busting bodies fall in the cemetery
Black blood raining on the street
All you nikkas, buried y'all
nikkas just came home, fresh out the state greens
Five time felon, thinking he jelling in Queens
It's pitiful - what bid could do, especially federal
Y'all young thugs wilding, see prison
Got a bed for you waiting, I clapped that Satan
But thought I was dreaming
I woke up masturbating in the bed with demons
I cried with every bit of strength of my small body
This is the life I chose, under God I'm tiny
Hard to find me, I popped up, lock shot-up
You can't B.I., see I'm eternal, not luck
You get shot-up, boxed-up next for the grave
Your flow is one dimensional, your level is 2nd grade
You're on top -- WHAT?
Copy and fukk, I said it first, you repeated
Your false crown covered in dirt - defeated
Y'all nikkas all hail, the King is dead
He running like a bytch with his tail between his legs
'Stillmatic', still eye 4 an eye, wanna be God
You're just the next rapper to die, fukking with Nas
Explain

I remember this....internet was talking about it back then, I had it on a mix cd, 'Eye For an Eye' freestyle, it was kinda known, but not known he was talking about Jay, no one new where it was gonna lead, and we were still a long way from the battle, Summer Jam, and 'The Blueprint'. Nas was considered on the ropes, kinda, he was still killing verses, and this was part of his resurgence leading up to Summer 2001. He was coming off 'Nastradamus'.

Yea, u pretty much captured the essence of that time period. When this dropped, I remember my boy and I trying to decipher who he was talking about...we came to the conclusion it was Jay-Z off the "False crown" and "Wanna be God" lines..but there was no way that we were really 100% certain at the time.

Pretty sure it was even before Prodigy was ranting and raving about Jay in 'The Source' wasn't that over the summer of 2000? No, it was all about the same time, Prodigy was in the beginning stages of Struggle P, and I remember he had some verse on some random Infamous Mobb, some shyt like that 'We ain't the Roc we ain't them fakkit ass nikkas'...that was like the calm before the storm...when Did Styles P 'Wait a Minute'? come out? I would have been listening to this in like Fall/Winter 2000, but that just may be when I finally had someone burn it to a cd for me. Maybe it was Spring 2000. Man I miss all that shyt, I'm glad I remember as much of it as I do, but there are still blanks...
