BALTIMORE (AP/7News) — A Baltimore jury has convicted a man of first-degree murder in the 2018 stabbing of his wife that he blamed on a panhandler.

The Baltimore Sun reports jurors deliberated about five hours over two days before convicting Keith Smith on Thursday of murdering his wife, Jacquelyn Smith.

Keith Smith told police his wife was knifed by a man after handing $10 to a female panhandler. She died on Dec. 1, 2018. Smith’s story drew national attention, but the story fell apart.

The charging documents released in March 2019 indicated that the story Keith and Valeria Smith gave to police about the death of Jacquelyn Smith did not match up with the evidence, Fox45 in Baltimore reported.

Police say they used CCTV cameras and cell phone evidence to retrace the steps of the Smiths. Charging documents say that there was no trace of the suspect's vehicle along the course they said they traveled.

Evidence instead showed that the car was in Druid Hill Park for approximately 15 minutes prior to the stabbing being reported.

The trio had been at the American Legion Hall prior to Jacquelyn's death, celebrating the birthday of Valeria. They are seen on surveillance footage leaving the establishment in East Baltimore around 11:45 p.m. on November 30th.

Smith said the panhandlers snatched his wife's necklace and wallet before stabbing her and running off. Fingerprint evidence showed that the only fingerprints on the outside of the vehicle, where they said the panhandlers had been, belonged to Keith Smith, Jacquelyn's husband.

Police say an informant tipped them off about a potential suspect named "Baby J", based on interviews and surveillance footage, police were able to determine that "Baby J" and his girlfriend were inside of a hotel at the time of the murder.

The autopsy showed that Smith was stabbed 5 times in the chest and was cut in the lower right arm.

In the car, detectives found a towel, a pair of black gloves and a set of yellow rubber gloves. In the back of the car, they found a duffel bag with Valeria's belongings and a towel as well as an artificial fingernail, like the ones worn by Valeria Smith.

On December 11, 2018 police were notified that the victim's visa had been used. Three teenage boys were identified and excluded as suspects after saying they found the victim's belongings at a bus stop on Caroline St and Madison Ave. Police say Keith Smith's GPS and cell phone activity show him near that area.

Keith Smith's friend allegedly told police Smith's brother, Vick said that Keith had asked him to "get rid" of Jacquelyn.

Vick told police that Jacquelyn had talked about divorcing Keith.

The charging documents say that through monitored phone calls, police heard Keith Smith try to book reservations to Cuba, Canada and the Virgin Islands.

Smith and his daughter were arrested during what police portrayed as a desperate dash to Mexico. He and his daughter Valeria were caught in Texas, about 20 miles away from the Mexico Border.

Valeria Smith, who pleaded guilty to acting as an accessory, testified that her father drove them to a park with his wife dozing and stabbed her.

“The story never sounded right,” said Marcel Trisvan, Jacquelyn’s brother. “I was never sold on it.”
