A show that kind of covers what OP is talking about was that stupid UPN show Seven Days. Main character had to use a vehicle made from alien tech that gave extreme pain to the pilot (I don't get it) but they said he couldn't pass out and had to be precise or he'd end up careening out into space or inside the planet.

I've only seen the movie once ages ago. I don't remember if they explained how it worked.

One of the most interesting methods I've seen though was the body snatcher style in Netflix's Travelers where a quantum AI handles all the calculations.
