I remember Gucci putting and cosigning on Nicki/OJ/Waka/Pee Wee/Migos/Thug/Future etc.

So when he had his slumps, someone in the circle carried the torch.

OVO made it a mission to give everyone's best songs to Drake. Now that Drake is trying to come back, there is no one blazing hot enough to distract us. Its all on him.smh

What are the odds that a major rapper signs someone bigger than them though? That's pretty rare. For every Wayne (Drake/Nicki) or Jay (Kanye) there are dozens of rappers who play the CEO game and never sign the next big thing.

Bigger issue to me is that his label has been so stagnant creatively. It's largely the same collection of acts from a decade ago and he's still pillaging for hooks/songs. He needs new blood in the studio. New writers, new rappers, etc.

After what you just said, why would anyone willingly sign up for the sweatshop :patrice:

Agree… it’s extremely hard to do. Drake & Nicki both being commercially viable is a tough task. I don’t think we see that again from a vanity label headed by a rapper. Wayne had the best 2 in the lineup to continue his run.

Edit: while still ultimately successful, egos played a big role. Nicki and Drake could have been humble. A lot behind the scenes played a role.

Look up the recent interview of TI talking about Shoulder Lean. He had the hook and passed it to Dro. Drake doing the opposite sharking all the best records from his artists. Dro's run in relation to TI is way larger than any OVO artist to Drake. The closest might have been Makkonen.

Even Ross/Meek
Jay-Z/J.Cole
Kanye/John Legend or Big Sean

Even Jeezy and YG

Almost every artist except for Drake had artists in the vicinity that had significant motion.

Party is doing alright for an alt r&b artist. More monthly listeners than Brent, Big Sean, Summer Walker, Kehlani, Bryson, Tory, etc. There's a ceiling on that type of music but he has a sizable female fanbase.

The OVO tent was a real big thing during the 2010s. Songs were being fed to Drake first, at the detriment of the tent workers. Not even really trying to develop anyone else. Abel was so smart for not signing. Look at the niccas coming out of this tent. Wild times.

If Drake was legitimately looking out for artists in the city over all of this time, he’d probably have a stronger base of support.

Drake is a selfish dude

Its funny.

Back in the day when the weeknd got away from Drake nobody understood why.

Everyone though he was being disloyal and a snake, myself included. We aint even know Drake wasnt writing his songs and was taking other nikkas work.

Now look at how big the weeknd became. No way he would of been able to do that under Drake.

One of Drake's biggest hits is Work and that is a Partynextdoor song that he took and gave to Rihanna.

Look at how he ignored Party for years too only to pop back up and use him as a shield just in case his next album flopped.
