Why does it feel like we couldn't even go one year without corporations and opportunistic politicians cheapening what should be a important holiday for black folks in this country? An afro pick is the symbol you decided to choose for black people being freed? :dahell: It couldn't be something like arms breaking chains or something that shows us gaining freedom?

Sometimes, I think these people are purposely trolling us.

here we go

:why: but its a holiday to celebrate freedom from slavery. Why not make it a direct reference to slavery and freedom from it instead of reaching and stretching to make it about something directly not tied to that? Secondly, a year from now when these explanations are forgotten, all people are going to see is a giant afro pick and it won't be immediately obvious what it is supposed to represent.

The conspiracy part of my brain makes me think these people are agents.

I real life don’t understand y’all. A lot y’all talk “nikka” this “nikka” that and gladly embrace as ‘endearment’ all day but the world comes crashing down at the sight of an Afro pick— as if it hasn’t been a symbol of resistance, self determination and self love.

Where do they make y’all at :mindblown:

Its a holiday about freedom from slavery. Not about self-love, self-determination. Resistance is the only thing tangentially related to the holiday. Not that those aren't good things, but like I said, a few years from now when people aren't around typing up convoluted paragraphs to tell you how this is tied to Juneteenth, it in no way tells you that it was done to celebrate Juneteenth. At a minimum, its a poor choice to represent freedom from slavery. Not to mention, its historical significance is literally a century removed from what it represents. If this was celebrating black power movements in the 1960's, ok.
