In 2020 there was a serious increase in social activism. The social consciousness for equality and justice felt more intense, more widespread, more angry, more diverse, and more aware than in the past.

Fast forward almost a year later and none of those cops are going to get charged with anything relevant, most of them won't be charged at all, despite overwhelming physical evidence and our most active year of protesting in decades.

So to what degree are protests and marching effective in 2021?

I think I’m burned out on everybody protesting everything. With the black vote giving the Democrats the White House and Congress. They have to deliver or the specter of the 2022 mid terms will hang over their head. So there shouldn’t be a need for marching or protesting. Hit them with the y’all said go out and vote. What happens if we don’t vote.

It’s important, I think. Change takes time, but giving up on fighting for change achieves nothing. Brown v Board took about ten years to actually be enforced after it was passed. Where would we be if all those people fighting for change just gave up because change wasn’t happening quickly enough?
This how I always felt. Changing ingrained behaviors, biases and perceptions isn't some overnight task or minute workshop.

Now that the Democrats control the Senate I think this will truly let us know how these protests have been working but I definitely think they are working because they have raised awareness and I see more people engaged than ever.

Gang violence...
white people rarely have to protest for white things. protesting is generally an acknowledgment that you are in a very weak position.

protest alone does not work for POC. there has to be threats of something meaningful like riots or voter apathy. when you protest while others are rioting or actively challenging democrats who could be doing better for you, the people protesting might actually get some dialog with those in power. it's a good cop bad cop game that has to be played.

and still, if you appear to have won initially, the protesters must always be vigilant that the concessions they receive are not symbolic or pyrrhic victories
