I remember Flex running "Criminology" back to back on Hot 97 weeks before the album dropped. The promos on The Box leading up to August 1st and after, with the "Criminology" video excerpt. Meth set everything off fall 94. Dirty held it down Spring 95 and Rae and Ghost splashed for the summer of 95.

*Its only right to add the "Freak N You" remix which was out around the same time as the Cuban Linx roll out. Jodeci's 3rd album "The Show The After Party, The Hotel" was part of that summer 95 rotation.

as someone who lived thru both purple tapes

raekwon was able to capture the essence and feeling of the first album leading up to the release of the second

Source magazine giving Cuban Linx 2, 3 1/2 mics was diabolical. At the very least it was 4 mics. There were too many high points on that album for such a low rating. Even Rae expressed frustration about such a low rating. I remember the biggest criticism in the article was that the album wasn't geared to attract new listeners. :stopitslime:

I will say this tho. CL2 was not all over the streets of NYC like the first one. I honestly think that the budget was drained for a proper roll out and promotion due to the years of delays. That's the only story that makes sense. "New Wu" was a perfect first single but I didn't hear it getting rotation on Hot 97 or Power 105 where one would think that it would. "House of flying daggers" being the next single billed as a J Dilla beat didn't do anything either. Despite all those setbacks CL2 was a great sequel and I feel it is the 2nd best Rae album.

I'm grateful I own the Loud records actual purple tape, not the get down re release.

When I first heard it at 14 it literally scared me like a horror movie. My brother bought it for me when it dropped. It was the black tape. I bought the purple one on eBay around 2010 for $100. Now mint copies are like $800+. Again, not the Get down version.

Then at 27 when I went through a relationship breakup it empowered me and helped my healing journey.

I've made posts about it on how it ages like fine wine.

Not only does it stand the test of time it literally sounds better as time goes on.

And honestly I think Ironman is Obfcl2 dropping practically in the same era. Sames voices and beats and improved just the perfect about like how Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 was a perfect and great sequel. Or Terminator 2 or Batman returns.
