American Masters - Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, a compelling documentary about the legendary Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, will make its U.S. broadcast premiere Tuesday, June 23 at 8pm on PBS (check local listings).

In addition to reflections from Morrison herself, the film also features new interviews with Hilton Als, Angela Davis, Fran Lebowitz, Walter Mosley, Sonia Sanchez and Oprah Winfrey, who turned "Beloved" into a feature film. Using director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders' elegant portrait-style interviews, AMERICAN MASTERS - Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am includes original music by Kathryn Bostic, a specially created opening sequence by artist Mickalene Thomas and evocative works by other contemporary African American artists including Kara Walker, Rashid Johnson and Kerry James Marshall. Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am is one of three AMERICAN MASTERS documentaries premiering this summer as part of PBS' summer-long celebration of female trailblazers in honor of the women's vote centennial.

American Masters - Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am is an artful and intimate meditation on the legendary Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author that examines her life, her works and the powerful themes she has confronted throughout her literary career. From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio, to '70s-era book tours with Muhammad Ali, from the front lines with Angela Davis to her own riverfront writing room, Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race, America, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own literature. Inspired to write because no one took a "little black girl" seriously, Morrison reflects on her lifelong deconstruction of the master narrative. Woven together with a rich collection of art, history, literature and personality, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed works, including novels "Beloved," "The Bluest Eye," "Sula" and "Song of Solomon," her role as an editor of iconic African American literature and her time teaching at Princeton University.

In addition to Morrison, the film features new interviews with Hilton Als, Angela Davis, Fran Lebowitz, Walter Mosley, Sonia Sanchez and Oprah Winfrey, who turned "Beloved" into a feature film.

Premiere Date: Tuesday, June 23 at 8 p.m. on PBS (check local listings), pbs.org/tonimorrison and the PBS Video app as part of PBS' summer-long celebration of women trailblazers

That's an interesting quote . Is it from a book or an interview?

God Help the Child - Wikipedia

So I let the name-calling, the bullying travel like poison, like lethal viruses through my veins with no antibiotics available. Which, actually, was a good thing now I think of it because I built up immunity so tough that not being a ‘****** girl’ was all I needed to win. I became a deep dark beauty who doesn’t need Botox for kissable lips or tanning spas to hide a deathlike pallor. And I don’t need silicon in my butt. I sold my elegant blackness to all those childhood ghosts and now they pay me for it. I have to say, forcing those tormentors—the real ones and others like them—to drool with envy when they see me is more than payback. It’s glory.

She has more than a few from that book.

“Correct what you can; learn from what you can’t.”

“Her color is a cross she will always carry.”

“When I woke up I reminded myself that freedom is never free. You have to fight for it. Work for it and make sure you are able to handle it. Now”

“No matter how hard we try to ignore it, the mind always knows truth and wants clarity.”

Thanks. One of my sisters and many women I've known were big fans of her work.

The exchange she had with the aussie in post 2, and the one with dikk Cavett from the trailer were common occurences as she rose to the top of the literary world. White people can't fully appreciate Black art unless it somehow reflects them. (Eminem,Kenny G)

I hope to learn more about her life and work in the doc.

(I'm also going to watch Beloved with a friend, soon. If there's an existing thread about the film, going to tag you and the other ladies from this thread. I heard it wasn't a good adaptation, and I think it might have been the precursor to some of the botched Black dramatic film projects that came later)
