The 38,387 that they always throw in our faces is just regular season points. I have no idea why the NBA and the media always make that the big record instead of total points scored in the NBA with playoffs included.
I get that making distinctions matters and we should draw a line somewhere (e.g. pre-season and All-Star points don't really matter) but with everybody nowadays (*cough MJ fanbase cough*) putting so much emphasis on playoffs mattering most, it's only right to consider regular season + playoffs together for a longevity appreciation record.
Kareem has 38,387 regular season and 5762 playoff points for 44,149 total NBA points scored.
LeBron has 36,348 regular season and 7631 playoff points for 43,979 total NBA points scored.
In other words, Kareem has the record for regular season points, LeBron has the record for playoff points. Kareem in addition has the total points record.
Why hype up the regular season record when everyone talks about playoffs mattering more instead of focusing on the total points record?
Can we as the Coli, obviously the most knowledgeable NBA fanbase of any media platform (
), please make a big deal out of and celebrate the total points record instead of letting the moment go by relatively quietly and waiting for the somewhat trivial regular season record?
Bron has been scoring points for the majority of the lives of the majority of Coli posters. Let's acknowledge that we were so called witnesses to all the points that mattered. Nobody in any generation has ever had the opportunity to watch a man score as many meaningful NBA points as we have gotten a chance to watch. That's what matters.
171 points means The King can break Kareem's record in about 6-8 games depending on how much he's gonna focus on scoring over assisting.
Interestingly, here are the next 9 games the Lakers will be playing:
game 1: Lakers @ Heat
game 2: Lakers @ Nets
game 3: Lakers @ 76ers
game 4: Lakers @ Hornets
game 5: Lakers @ Hawks
game 6: Lakers vs Blazers
game 7: Lakers @ Clippers
game 8: Lakers vs Knicks
game 9: Lakers vs Bucks
He's playing against some of the biggest stars in the league these next few games. Basically he can pace himself to decide in what setting vs what team he wants to break it. It's too bad the Knicks game isn't in NYC or else he could've broken the record at the Mecca. Game 6 is realistically the first chance he breaks it which is just in time to return to a home crowd albeit against a Lillard-less meh Blazers squad. But game 7 vs Clippers would be practically at home too even though it's technically an away game plus it's against the city rival. Game 8 would be at home vs a historic franchise. Game 9 would be at home vs the new face of the league in Giannis.
I really hope someone has informed Bron of this and that the NBA will acknowledge this moment with more than just an ESPN graphic as it happens.
Let us basketball fans celebrate The King's greatness these next few games and appreciate and salute greatness
UPDATE: With the play-in game included, LeBron only needs 27 more points to break it. Lakers are playing in Portland tonight...
Black history month too
