5. Future - Honest : What can I say? Every beat was fire, every hook was energetic, and at times he was real focused on here. I thought the album brought alot of variety. club tracks, trax for the chix, instrospective joints, & a few left field eccletic joints. This the type of album u can ride to with ya lady & yall can both equally appreciate the vibe.
Top 3 trax: Special, How Can I Not, I'll Be Yours
4. Freddie Gibbs - Pinata : Madlib & Gangsta Gibbs link up to make a no nonsense street rap record. Gibbs is right at home over madlibs dusty production & crafts some of his best songs to date. The album plays out like graphic novel or like flippin thru the pages of a comic book. one minute gibbs is cookin n servin dope, then the next he's thinkin back about an old fling that he's lost due to his commitment to the street life, and then all of sudden he's gettin some chicken. Gibbs also takes time to address young jeezy on the album, not in a beef sorta way but inna hurt kinda way. Like the pain I felt when I found out that Gillie the Kid wrote all that dope shvt for Wayne back in the day.
Top 3 trax: Shame, Broken, Deeper
3. Isaiah Rashad - Cilvia : The first few times I bumped this album I thought it was wack and boring and then on 1 shytty day a joint from this hit my shuffle and it clicked. This album is a somber coming of age tale about a young twenty sumn just tryna find his way and purpose in life, but in the meantime he's just doin the only things that he knows how to do. drink, smoke, kick it, dwell on the past, & hope for the future. Rashad is more than a kendrick lamar clone. in fact hes not that at all. He's just a regular dude with the gift of gab, a good ear for beats, and the ability to write som catchy soulful hooks.
Top 3 trax: rip kevin miller, heavenly father, ronnie drake
2. Bas - Last Winter : This Album was just str8 piff. It can go in any situation. car, club, headphones, etc. Bas does a good job with "putting the candy with the medicine". The beat selection is so good and cohesive that u gotta rock to it & when u start listenin u realize that he is rappin his ass off. the album is so dense with with witty lyrics that u catch sumn new everytime u bump it. The hooks are catchy, the beats bounce, and every verse is penned with care. Its one of the albums that you can just listen to back to back while u play 2k or sum shyt. I never took this joint out the whip once I got it.
Top 3 trax: Fiji water, just made bail, Last winter
1. Jaden Smith - Cool Tape vol.2 : In the words of Cedric the entertainer, "imma grown ass man dawg". but really im 25. jaden smith is 16 I think. No way did I think I could relate to this shvt & I immediately wrote the kid after I seen em on World Star doin the ryu kick move in a shirt/skirt. That shvt threw me off, but in no way is that song or video a true representation of who this kid is as an artist. Once I gave the tape an honest listen I was nothin short of blown away. jaden isnt the best rapper or hook maker but where he shines is his ability to express himself, his thoughts, & his feelings which makes you able to see the world from his point of view. Its becomes clear that Jaden is miles ahead of other artists mentally when he starts expressing his views on the world, conscienceness, & humanity. His storytelling is vivid and filled with humor. His sister willow handles much of the hook work on the album, & she kills it inna alanis morresette kinda way. Willow serves as the icing on the cake. The subject matter is mature and thought provoking. but most importantly the positive vibes you get when u listen to this album cant be explained. Jaden only shows his age on trax 1 & 5 n while those trax dont fit with the cohesive vibe of the rest of the album, theyre not bad at all. In short, if you wanna hear some good music, look no further than this. The fact that a 16 & 14 year old crafted one of the best albums of the year is a testament to the mediocre moshpit that is the modern music of today.
TOP 3 trax: PCH, Zoned, Let it Breathe
