I'm moving to a big city on my own and I've been set on buying and reforming a van for living until I save enough money to invest in my future career - we could be talking 2-5 years. I'm in the process of transferring schools and I'm moving in the beginning of June. Here's what I've gathered:
Reforming a van for sleeping and storing a mini-fridge;
Showering and hygiene at a local gym;
Alternate my time between work, school and local library for studying.
Anyone out there who's lived this lifestyle has tips on vehicles, handiwork, hassle-free parking?

are there cheap RV options you can look into?
Gas cost of a commercial plane fuel. :huhldup:
Edit: it doesn't seem as bad as I thought. It might be my first option if I do a little more research. Thank you.

You will be getting 0 p*ssy for 2.5 years
Regardless of being a bisexual female, casual sex isn't even in my top 20 list of concerns. Besides, a quick youtube search shows that van-life hippies usually live with a female significant other. But I'll grant you that they're all white.

Haven't stumbled upon her so far. Thanks!

I confess it doesn't sound too unreasonable and I take long showers religiously. :ehh:

I could never do it myself and I have no clue about any tips to give to you :hubie:

BUT, I do admire and salute your thrift and willingness to try something different.

What are you going to do if the gym is closed and you need to take a midnight dump?:ohhh::ohhh:

Do you have a back up? This doesn't seem 100% reasonable. You should think of finding a YMCA and trying to gt into one of their single rooms (relatively cheap--but you're around some questionable people), or at least on the list for when you're fed up of living on the street.

And a tip on parking: hotel parking lots, you won't look out of place and the bigger the lot the better. Make sure to switch it up though, and try to get there once the sun has gone down. Keep your doors locked AT ALL TIMES, and unless someone is willing to help you out, do not go telling just anybody you're living in your car, thats how nikkas get robbed, and you're a girl? Be extra safe OP, you'll run into a lot of weirdos doing this if you'e not safe.

...also if you meet someone tryng to help you out and let you live with them, please be careful, no matter if its a dude or woman, you don't understand what type of fukked up situations people have gotten themselves into being desperate and naive. There are some sick fukks in this world and they only need a sliver of a chance to mess your life up. And you may think that because you're *choosing* this lifestyle it makes you different or whatnot, but if you're doing this without having other options up you're sleeve....then you're doing this all wrong. But, still I hope you can save $ OP.

Also how do you plan on feeding yourself? Do you have a meal plan, or are you going to be eating cheap takeout?

Most people have a regular shytting schedule. It's not common to spontaneously need to shyt. Combine that with the fact that she will probably eat before the sun goes down / night (more restraints open she can sit down or eat alone in a park - she'll probably take a shyt when she wakes up and becomes active, then after breakfast probably shyt again mid day.

People do it, I don't know how they get good sleep. When I park my car I glance at my surroundings get out then go in, come out load up and leave. I never see people sleeping but if you watch people long enough there are people that walk by and look into vehicles. Most family vans have dark windows so someone would really have to peer into it which isn't common, if a car pulls in and no one gets out and the engine shuts off something ain't right. Keep in mind you have to be discrete about it because you're going to have certain spots, not just one that you routinely sleep / park and if casual people who are attentive (like me) can pick up -that Grey van is always if not always here...ive seen it pull up but no one ever gets out. Or better yet a woman got out and grabbed something out the back then went back in...

Now you're a target.

It seems kind of weird but people sit in their cars and smoke ( cigs or weed) especially if they work there, if not just a chance to get out of the house away from husband/wife/kids/mom/dad/etc , people sit in cars and talk on the phone, drink (alcohol or coffee) during these times those people are observant, with nothing but time to count the cars and do their task. It sounds crazy but there was a woman who would bring her kids to work and leave them in the van while she worked 530am to 1pm. I'd go out at 8am to chill in my car and drink coffee on a nice morning (sometimes open the roof and let the morning air, fresh cut grass and air do what it do) just enjoy the cup - - anyway all of a sudden 2 cars over this family van starts rocking and I hear children's voices...i had plenty of time to put the shyt together 'daycare prices too high, single parent...you gotta do what you gotta do' plus one time I saw her come out and check on them.

I would definitely cop a handgun and a ccw. Go to the range and fire at least 500 rounds then do whatever you want with the confidence that you have a better chance of protecting yourself.

Have you calculated how much you would spend on just parking and gas? If you are in a big city you just can't be camped out anywhere all day every day, that sh*t will get towed. What about safety? If you are a single girl ALWAYS sleeping in a car over the period of 2-5 years you are going to develop a pattern, a lot of creeps out there. If you were traveling cross country it would be a different story. Using Chicago as an example, most public places have metered parking, and most shopping centers have full time security, you will get booted out. This is not a good plan for big city living, it would be much more economical and practical for you to do an apartment share in the hood somewhere. Off topic how the hell did you get so deep in the red? :what:

If you're a White Male in San Francisco it could work....

But for anyone else I'd suggest a bulletproof RV with motion sensor detected CCTV dash cam and mini cams around the perimeter and work out a plan to park behind a local business that you potentially work for part time during your stay. Unfortunately this could cost about $10k but probably cheaper than your rent would be for 3 years depending on your area.

Glock up with a legal permit in your state and register the RV as necessary so if a criminal does target you - You'll have an official "residence" that's not a regular motor vehicle. Easier to do this in states that have a large trailer trash population. It would be really good if you could work for the local business as I mentioned above to help keep a low profile and lessen any potential complications or trespassing issues etc.

I've considered this in the past but went in another direction. There are a lot of great websites online with good tips on how to save and how to stay safe.

As an alternative option: Have you considered renting a room, if it's just you? Just a place to shower and sleep (without worrying about who's lurking while you slumber)? I heard Walmart lets people stay in their parking lots, and some have 'regulars', who would be somewhat of a neighborhood watch.
