Travelling around the world solo

I finally got my money right and really thinking of going to Thailand, Japan, Brazil and perhaps some cities in Europe in 2014. The only problem is none of the people I know can afford it or simply aren't about that life. Those of you that have travelled solo can you tell me what it was like? How do you cope with boredom, making friends, and all that. Give me some advice
