NYC tri-state peeps. what's some good suburbs to rent and experience suburban or small town life. I'll be working from home for the foreseeable future and what to experience living outside the city before going all in and buying a house.
I'm interested in places that's close to nature where I can go riding, hiking and do other outdoor activities easily. I've been looking at places like dobbs-ferry, tarrytown, sleepy hollow, crotonville, coldspring, etc cause they're close to the river and nature which seems nice. other than that I don't know much about those areas and willing to get some more recommendations.

Personally, I prefer the NJ and Westchester suburbs over most of long Island. I only like the gold coast/East Hampton, which is super expensive, part of Long Island. Also, some Brooklyn and Queens neighborhoods are really suburban and may fit your criteria.

Bergen, Passaic, Union, Morris, and Essex counties in New Jersey have good sized nature reserves. Besides the well-known, relatively speaking, cities, much of New Jersey is pretty much small town and suburban. Over the past 15 years or so, much of the residential construction in these Northern New Jersey towns has been centered around the NJ Transit train stations. Most of which can get you into the city within an hour, give or take. These apartments, and their proximity to the trains, are fashioned as a less expensive alternative to living in the city.

If you're willing to go all the way up to Tarrytown, then I would suggest the entire Rockland County or the entire Westchester County. And Northern NJ you got Bergen, Passiac, and Sussex counties which are also similar

Has everything you need for nature, suburbs, easier parking, outdoor activities, and less an hour from the City

And from the stuff you looking for, Long Island ain't it lol

I would suggest the South Orange/Maplewood area, they have good sized middle class Black communities, good school system, train station right there pretty much. South Mountain reservation right there. Not that far from the Poconos (75 min drive) not that far from the shore (90 mins).

The burbs that are past Westchester like Duchess, Rockland County and Hudson valley. Part of CT also and parts of NJ that are immediately past the towns and cities bordering the Hudson

This, I live in Essex, the burbs. If you don't have the cap to buy a house, rent a house. Apartments are expensive unless you have the money or roommates. Try to live around the transit (bus, train, light rail) to save hella money.

Essex Falls, Millburn, Verona and the surrounding towns are quiet for the most part and have large parks and/or nature trails.
