All of the goat teams from that era would murder today's best teams.
Yeah maybe the numbers wouldn't back me up here since I don't have them, but it seems like the top recruits/players were more concentrated at the traditional powers through the 90s and 00s than they are now.

In 2015, you can pretty much see any game you want to see on TV. An innovative coach can put any school on the map. Talent is spreading out thinner than it ever used to. Even the SEC is starting to come down to earth, the Big 10 is making a resurgence when everyone thought it was dead. Big 12 teams score a lot of points but there isn't one good defense in the entire conference. So yeah, it's definitely tough to find any real dominance in college football these days. Even OSU has looked very human so far this year

Like @resurrection said talent is more spread out today. The baylors, tcus, oregons of the world have come up using new facilities, cool uniforms, and spread offenses. Plus there was much more stability with the blue bloods back then. Since then Texas, Michigan, USC, Florida, and Miami have had coaching changes that haven't worked out.
