Currently arguing with some jackass who is trying to make this argument to me (in light of the Bill O'Brien move)

I told him to gtfo, plenty of jobs have guys that stay for several years, have no desire to leave, because they are happy and have no interest in the NFL or even a bigger program.

I don't think it's naive to believe, especially in the case of large programs like Texas, Bama, OSU, etc. that those jobs are dream jobs to some and there are great coaches who would dream of securing those jobs and retiring there. As Schiano is said to feel about the PSU job.

Thoughts?

But every single one?

I don't buy that. I think there are guys who genuinely feel loyalty to their program, they aspired to be there, and if they can, hope to retire there. Esp if someone is an alumni or has ties to the program somehow. I mean, there are plenty of folks in all kinds of professions who do it because they like it, not because of the money. I refuse to believe that "college football head coach" is a profession that is somehow immune to commitment and loyalty. Like Bill Snyder at KSU for instance. Mack Brown at Texas. I mean I know y'all hate him but Joe Pa was obv committed. I mean.. there's gotta be a good mix between loyal guys and money guys right? Like I'd even be willing to bet Urban doesn't leave OSU unless he's forced, and he's known as a nomad. Saban the nomad didn't leave Bama..

Penn state is a "destination" job for a certain guy

Not for o'brien... He was an nfl guy from the beginning

Hire some schmuck like schiano and he'll never leave

Obrien always wanted to be a NFL coach. The Penn St job was the easiest and best resume builder job probably ever.

I'm not talking about O'Brien or PSU though, that's just how the conversation started. Everybody knows BOB wanted the NFL

I'm talking in general. I mean, some college jobs are "destination jobs", and many coaches out there consider them as such, right? I mean there's no way there is literally ZERO sense of loyalty or commitment in this entire profession, right?

depends on the school and the coach. Most coaches are gonna try the NFL at some point unless their icons like joe pa or bowden and they can call their own shots.

Look at all the coaches who went to the nfl and came back

saban, petrino, spurrier etc...

depends on the coach. every school is a stepping stone for some no matter the prestige. even your precious PSU or OSU or Alabama and USC.

The smart ones stay at the college level if they have the dream program.

I still think Chip Kelly FUKKED up by going to the eagles. It's all good now cause they are in the playoffs....but 5 years from now :usure:

He could of been god status at Oregon and did whatever he wanted to do. He won't last ten years in Philly.

False.

Talking heads have brainwashed fans into thinking this, but the traditional powers (Texas, USC, Bama, Michigan, etc) are better jobs than NFL coaching positions. They control every facet of their program, have longer careers, and are gods if they win. Beli may be the last of the long term NFL coaches. There's turnover every few years.
