I only watch On Demand series that has been the new wave anyways.
The problem is people still like background noise so they will leave a standard "News" channel on in the background and most are sensationalist.
Like if you look at NY1 compared to other regional news channels the production quality is higher and less theatrics. So there are exceptions to the rule but most people are broke and bored and instead of creating their own dreams they want to watch others fall.
