In a sense the mainstream media made Donald Trump. They gave him all the free air time on TV in order to boost their TV ratings. All it did was rally the right wing constituency behind him. They energized his voter base with free press.

Trump got boosted by the media, for sure, but his populist politics, sexism, racism, and white identity politics were a lethal combo perfect for a White majority country.

You can't discount the fact that Hillary was a terrible candidate. You need someone to be excited for (see 2008 Obama), not just voting for who you see is the lesser of the 2 evils (Kerry 2004).
