They're both opportunistic conmen.
maybe not the next republican candidate but within the next twenty years we'll have someone who basically learned from his mistakes but is as dangerous in the ways that make trump dangerous.
really this is just keeping with the trajectory of the republican party. certain elements of it (authoritarianism, christian theocratic sympathies, white supremacism) are going to continue to be even more openly visible as party values (of course they are at this point to us anyway).
