This story is reflective of so many problems in this country... prejudice, lack of education, fake news, PTSD, the effects of ill-conceived settlement of immigrants/refugees, soulless capitalism.

I drove through a few cities in Kansas a few months ago... Liberal, Hugoton, etc. Not hard to believe a story like this occurred. Completely middle of nowhere. I stayed at a hotel in Hugoton and the owner was Indian. I'm always surprised these people take a chance on the American dream by going to places like that where there are large populations of uneducated white people likely to be angry when their jobs are taken.

The worst part of the story was the guy saying he didn't care if he killed a 1-year-old.

Glad they stopped it.

you conveniently ignored the part where the article clearly states Trump whipping up this anti-immigrant fervor during his campaign stops in Kansas

but we always knew you were intellectually dishonest :ld:

Anti-immigrant sentiment predates Trump. He certainly made it worse and more open.

PTSD? conceived settlement of immigrants/refugees?? Capitalism????

It mentioned one of the suspects having PTSD. It may have played zero role in this, but it tied a tour in Iraq to his hatred of Muslims. We send people to fight senseless wars and do little for them when they come back, which manifests in all sorts of terrible ways.

Ill-conceived resettlement:

So IBP turned to a new immigrant population eager for work: refugees fleeing life-threatening oppression around the world. In 1980, Jimmy Carter had tripled the number of political refugeeswho could be admitted to the United States. Over the next decade, the population of Garden City soared, from 18,000 to 24,000. Two-thirds of the newcomers were Southeast Asian or Hispanic.

Garden City was completely unprepared for the sudden influx. Workers were forced to live out of cars, tents, and hotels. IBP lobbied the city to rezone, allowing the construction of mobile home parks. Before long, a trailer park on the eastern edge of town swelled to more than 500 units, accounting for nearly 10 percent of the town’s entire population. Crime and fires were rampant, and almost none of the new residents had access to essential services.

And soulless capitalism - people in unskilled jobs are easily replaceable, so immigrants come in and work for less, causing Americans to lose their jobs. Many of these people don't have an education for the 21st century, so they are out of work and resentment boils over.
