Coyness is all they ever had. There wasn't much of a reason for them to elect Trump in the first place, apart from his ability to piss off smarmy liberals they didn't like, and his willingness to buck Republican orthodoxy on certain economic issues.

But there's no establishment anymore---Trump IS the establishment There is no one left to juxtapose him with. If he's judged by his own merits, Trump will almost certainly fail unless he's counseled by the right people. And so far, it's looking like he won't be.
