Legal recruiters get paid a nice penny when they place candidates. I’ve known this black legal recruiter for years and decided to work with him last year just off the love. In 13 months, he got me zero interviews. Every single interview I’ve had came from jobs I applied to directly. And the majority of the roles he ‘submitted me for’ were ones I found myself, I even just let him handle them so he’d get paid if it worked out. Then about three months ago, he ghosted me completely, right when he knew I was on the brink of getting fired.

But also, legal recruiters are hit and miss. I’ve gotten one attorney job through a recruiter. Every other one I’ve had was through my own work searching and applying to firms/in house jobs. If anything, I’ll use the recruiter’s LinkedIn posts to see what’s open and go to the firm directly to apply. They usually will not say the name of the firm so you have to respond to their post and talk to the recruiter in order for them to tell you the name of the firm, but the job description often makes it pretty clear which firm it is because the firms separately posts those open positions.
