That's not entirely accurate. I was in the crowd at Backlash 2003 and it was a mixed reaction for both Lesnar and Cena. It wasn't really a hot match either. But Cena had started to get face reactions prior to that match. He was pretty over during the tournament leading up to it. The match wasn't too hot because everyone knew Cena wasn't in Lesnar's class yet.

Cena didn't start getting boos as a face until the feuds with Jericho and Angle, especially Angle because everyone was pissed that Cena was outwrestling an Olympic gold medalist

The thing with cena that was odd is that it's like wwe didn't really understand what got him over, they started taking away his rap stuff , any edge he had and turned him Into a weird hogan type face who overcame all the odds no matter how ridiculous and saying corny jokes . The corny jokes in promos to me hurt him even more though than the oh no cena got beat up for 20 minutes before his comeback win style of matches he had.

right away after vengeance 2005. he immediately stopped doing what got him over and they tried to make him a hodgepodge of Rock and Hogan and Austin. as soon as they did that any chance he had to become their top guy in a good sense went to hell and it's been a decade of bury everyone to prop him up since that happened.
