Tbh, a lot of Republicans think Trump is a POS of a human being hence why there's been an increasing push for DeSantis who's perceived as hardlined as Trump but more "competent."

Trump dissed all sorts of Republicans from Cruz to the Bush family to the McCain family to Carson to even DeSantis now. He's burned a lot of bridges and the only reason he's tolerated is because he's seen as the best chance of beating Democrats in elections.

Outside of his diehard fans, Trump is a very polarizing figure in the GOP that they simply tolerate due to not having many strong candidates with a chance to win elections.

Hell, I remember back in 2016 when Cruz basically accused Trump of being a grifter and a charlatan and it took months for him to swallow his pride and support Trump.

Trumps support during the past midterms wasn’t as solid as it was previously. His hold on the larger GOP isn’t as strong as it was 2016-2018. They are basically waiting him out now. In 2017 they wouldn’t have dared to spout this. But this just means an even worse version of Trump is coming.

Yup. Trump branded himself as a winner and losing the 2020 election ironically hurt his brand.
