Geopolitics made sense to me when I realized that in that part of the world, people don't operate on yearly aspirations. They operate on century long plots to return to historical heights. They will make the progressive and steady march towards some period of greatness 1000 years ago if they need to.

:francis: Theres no way to test or falsify that hypothesis...We have to form opinions based on what we learn in the limited slice of time that we occupy.

When can we officially crown him as a dictator?
Never going to happen and its all because of that fukking Incirlik base we value...

The pussies we elect won't even acknowledge the Armenian genocide because of that base...

The amount of shyt this demonic sand fakkit has gotten away with because of a base they didn't even let us use in the Iraq war is downright appalling...

The error the West has done was consider Turkey as the "other" stable ME country (with Israël). It wasn't that bad a bet tbh, because Turkey was leaning more towards Europe for a long time...but Europe in the mid 2000s (especially right leaders like Sarkozy and them) started acting up on Turkey being European or not, what with the whole stigma on Muslims post 9-11 and the disaster that was the invasion of Iraq. That's when there was speak of adding "Catholic origins" in the project of the abandonned EU constitution :mjpls::snoop:. Funny enough, Turkey was on par with France with regards towards secularity. Women couldn't wear the veil in universities and stuff like that.

Erdogan is anyhing but stupid, so he switched his politics towards the immediate neighbourhood and the East. And went all-out on economic development (sacrificing other parts of development). So, more money and more influence in the region. Less need to follow whatever the West judges "right". To do that he rode the muslim revival wave, so more religion too.

And Turkey is the only NATO member in the hottest region of the world. So, yeah, he knows what his advantages are and has played the US and the EU. AND increased his power and Turkey's economic power while doing so.

Only thing that could really mess with Erdogan is if ISIS starts a full offensive. Everyone knows it's a complicated relationship, with support from Turkey, but that didn't stop from being attacked.

I doubt the West will do anything serious about Erdogan. There will be a lot of talk of sanctions and whatnot, some diplomatic ties mighy suffer but I doubt it will be big...we'll see. Plus let's not forget there are a lot of Turks in Germany, France, Belgium...they can add pressure too. I doubt it's in anyone's interest not to have a stable Turkey, which is a gateway to Europe, and if I'm not mistaken Israël and Turkey have just started repairing diplomatic ties too.
