Avon grew up under older cats who taught him the “rules” to the game. He had a code, even in battle. Sunday truce, etc.

Marlo wasn’t brought up by any OGs and there was nothing he wouldn’t do to get ahead in the game. In that sense, he was much more like Stringer. Don’t sleep.

Marlo was a savage. His final scene of him licking his own blood was put in there to drive that home. He can’t function without conflict because he truly enjoyed fighting and blood spilling.

Avon embraced conflict because he thought that was the only way to solidify your place at the top. I never got the sense he enjoyed gun fights and murder. You can tell Marlo relished in them.

Marlo represented the younger generation and ruthlessness that evolved from the broken homes and lawlessness of the crack era.

Nah, Avon was way more gangsta than Marlo, a lot smarter and cunning, with a deeper love for Baltimore. Marlo was a psychopath who lucked out at an opportune time, filling the vacuum left by Avon’s incarceration and Stringer’s focus on insulating him and Avon from the streets. If Avon hadn’t caught feelings over Stringer making moves, Marlo would have been killed with ease.
