She really fukked up by doing what Americans do in foreign countries and not knowing the local customs.........she should have been thoroughly schooled on the audience she was trying to get and gave a canned answer and moved on with no problems. Cacs were never her target audience so I hope they weren't expecting adoption there instead of hoping......

We still love our African ladies.

Sounds like she didn't let dudes in the industry push up on her like they wanted to.

She is smarter than they thought.

both sides need to be schooled. for the most part mixed people in other parts of the world are considered mixed. unlike America.... Canada follows America but most Brits don't consider mixed people Black they are mixed. most Africans consider mixed people mixed. Except for South Africa... we don't have a whole category for them.

I don't think there was a right answer she could have gave in hindsight. her silence was considered a slight also erroneously. As more of the diaspora opens up and we are able to interact on a world stage we should be taking the time to learn about each other. But beyond all this she is just a one hit wonder :skip:

we doing too much analysis. bish was made in the studio. South African singers would wash her so fast. she can't hang on a musical level with the talent in her country.

Wish her the best but her career is over

Her team should always tell these radio personalities to leave that question alone but they fukked this young girl up

She’s from South African and intelligent people would know, but breakfast club audience and majority of American nikkas are clueless about it..

She needed to fire her media coach for not training her how to answer that, or making sure that question was not asked. It's not that difficult to articulate what "coloured" means in a South African context.

Her career isn't over because of this. She has nothing to follow up.

What did she do?
She’s a “colored” South African which means she’s mixed. The problem is during apartheid South Africa, colored people had more rights and freedoms than people classified as black.

Unlike in America during segregation, where you had white and black, South Africa had white, colored, then black.

Colored South Africans knew they were higher in the racial hierarchy and acted as such. This culture still exists and South Africa is still de facto segregated.

When asked about this racial dynamic she avoided the question because she comes from a culture where being black is considered inferior to being colored, but she’s trying to crossover into the American music industry doing a radio interview with a predominantly black audience. Black women saw right through the BS. In fairness, this is probably the first time she’s been asked this question because America is really the only place where black people still reject racism and racist ideals.

Haters dug up a 2020 TikTok where she described herself as a “colored South African” instead of as a Black woman, and people frame it as her implying she was superior.

Yeah, part of it was just a cultural disconnect. Thats how they do where she's from. and looking at her parents her dad looks indian, and her mom looks half black. So i can understand where she is coming from.

But as other posters have pointed out. her culture does have a history of being anti black. and seeing that as a negative.

so culture or not, it wasn't going to vibe well with americans. but that is just speculation, might not have anything to do with her low sales.
Her songs always seemed kinda mid to me. She just pretty. Lots of pretty singers with mid talent peak at one hit wonder status.

I honestly think Tyla got hit with a smear campaign.

FBA/ADOS militants didn’t like a biracial artist blowing up on Afrobeats, and some colorist Black women jealous of her skin tone and hair texture piled on.

They twisted her calling herself “colored” into some anti-Black racist thing that it never was

They're over on LSA calling her "uppity" lol. That tells me how insecure she makes them feel

Lmao. The broad isn’t talented and on top of that, she doesn’t have a personality that sells the albums for her. Thus, this isn’t the result of some smear campaign from FBA militants and Shea Butter twitter. She’s basically Rihanna without the Good Girl Gone Bad switch up. And even then, I don’t see her selling that shyt like Rihanna did.
