Uber Ordered To Pay $1.1 Million To Blind Passenger Who Was Denied Rides 14 Times

A blind person with a guide dog was denied rides and harassed because of her guide dog. She sued Uber, which tried to blame its contractors and deny liability. However, an arbitrator has rejected that argument and found the company liable, awarding the blind passenger $1.1 million. The arbitrator found that Uber staffers coached drivers on how to deny rides to disabled passengers without it appearing to be a violation of the law. The staffers also advocated to keep problematic drivers on the platform.

This is one of the problems with contractors. Corporations can try to use plausible deniability.

The coaching too. Companies do this to legally deny black people.

I’m surprised she didn’t get a much larger settlement. ADA related suits usually have teeth.

Uber and Lyft need to do more to stop their drivers from gaming the system. In the DC metro area the drivers don’t want to make trips into downtown DC. They don’t want to go on long trips to the suburbs. They don’t want to drive in rush hour. They sit and wait after accepting the ride to see if you’ll cancel. And on and on. And it usually comes down to the drivers trying to make more $.
