Lewis Edwards targeted more than 200 girls and blackmailed them to send sexual images.

Lewis Edwards, of Cefn Glas, Bridgend, groomed more than 200 girls online.

The 24-year-old, who had 4,500 indecent images of children, admitted 160 counts of child sexual abuse and blackmail.

The South Wales Police officer messaged 210 girls aged 10 to 16 from November 2020 until February 2023 and images of 207 of them were found on his devices.

Edwards joined the force in January 2021, but is now barred from policing following a misconduct hearing.

He refused to come to the courtroom throughout his three-day sentencing hearing.

Handing Edwards a life sentence with a minimum term of 12 years, Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke said: "It is clear that he not only gained sexual gratification from his offending but he also enjoyed the power and control he had over these young girls."

She described his behaviour as "cruel and sadistic", adding that he posed a high risk of danger to children.

One he's a policeman.
Two, it's a non violent offence and the prisons are full.
Three, unless he gets a whole life sentence or at His Majesty's Pleasure (meaning an indefinite sentence), this person won't serve a full sentence.
Four, this is the UK. You rarely serve out your full sentence.

In theory I agree with you, in practice UK prison system isn’t rehabilitating anyone. A friend of mine recently completed a bid in the midlands for a non violent crime. They threw him in solitary for weeks for the slightest infraction. Housed him in gen pop with a guy who had a double murder. The only tangible difference between the two systems is the US for profit element.
