Team that seems completely out of new ideas: Detroit Lions
Pressure from ownership is on general manager Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia to compete for the playoffs in 2020. This type of situation rarely ends well, and it's hard to look at the moves the Lions made in free agency and find a significant upgrade in talent. Unsurprisingly, they went to the Patriots' well, signing nose tackle Danny Shelton and linebacker Jamie Collins while also trading for safety Duron Harmon. They traded corner Darius Slay and signed Desmond Trufant. They released right tackle Rick Wagner and signed Halapoulivaati Vaitai to a five-year, $45 million deal. If you view those moves as some kind of significant upgrade, you probably wear Lions PJs to bed every night. To make matters worse, Slay
had some less than flattering things to say about the Patricia experience on his way out. His departure comes just months after the Lions surprisingly traded safety Quandre Diggs to the Seahawks. In two years under Patricia's direction,
the Lions defense has finished 28th and 27th in efficiency. Maybe a healthy Matthew Stafford will save them, but the Lions' moves this offseason suggest an unwavering commitment to mediocrity.
