COUNTRY RAP TUNES EDITION
Crooked Lettaz - Jacksonville Mississipi
Back in 99 I stumbled on the album Grey Skies as a rap fan from up north we didn't get much southern rap music on the airwaves so you had to be a crate digger. First thing I noticed was the Nore feature on Firewater and that pulled me in, he was probably on here courtesy of Penalty Records. This was a young group composed of David Banner and Kamikaze rapping out their college dorm and delivering a solid album that formed a cult following years before Like a pimp. It wasn't to my surprise then that Pimp C was featured on this album and would later work with David Banner on his major debut and break out single. Made on a shoe string budget the album didn't sound as polished as it could have but that never stopped the music from shinning. Let's appreciate this one and take it back for a moment.
Fun Trivia - Crooked Lettaz cut a record with Marley Marl that was played on Future Flavas by Pete Rock but never released...
Ghetto Mafia - Atlanta Georgia
Nino and Wicked had been active in the Atlanta rap scene since around the mid 90's but I didn't catch wind of them as fan until Straight from the Dec(97) and On da Grind(98) albums. They had a style of rap that can in my opinion be considered a pre-cursor to a lot of trap music not in sound but rather content as rappers. Not the strongest of emcees but their back and forth rhymes over laid back beats emphasized spitting game over being lyrical and it was effective at being entertaining. Their visuals were also often hilarious like the video for in Decatur... Let's revisit some of their best cuts.

Dirty - Montgomery Alabama
The Pimp and the Gangsta a duo made up of 2 cousins.. One of the most enigmatic groups to emerge from the south for an East Coast head but they were cold with their raps, no slouches at all. I was captivated by their imagery to say the least. First song I caught onto was Hit Da floe but they had regional success before that from their debut in 99. As strong as duos go, their styles complimented each other well and the production was hard!
Field Mob - Albany Georgia
These guys had some major success but still get some unnecessary hate. Shawn J and Smoke are one of the best duo in this whole category. Strong lyrics, entertaining and also introspective at times. They fell victim to industry bullshyt but they never fell short of talent. At their best they were a joy to listen to. Project Dreamz was my intro to the duo and they really talking that shyt if you pay attention. Ashy to Classy and From the Roota to Toota are their strongest albums in my opinion.
