Unfortunately in the grand scheme of things nothing we do is really important

In a few billion years the sun will go super nova and any record of human beings will probably be long gone much less will anyone care which is why we must live unselfishly and remember the world is bigger than us to deny that is to deny nature
You contradict yourself in your premise.

Why must we live unselfishly if NOTHING we do matters.

In that case, pleasure maximization should be No. 1 Priority.

No?

Indeed. However, the power & commitment required to get everyone to accept your philosophy would require a few dozen life times.

If nothing matters, why dedicate oneself to that goal?

There is something that YOU know in your lifetime...MOST people will not adopt such a beautiful philosophy.

There is somethign that you preach... Nothing we do is important...

Thus..if attempting to get people to adopt your philosophy wouldn't matter, than the majority of people won't adopt it. Now, individually, why is it more beneficial to be unselfish?

Sidenote: I'm not expressing disagreement. I'm challenging your philosophy because I'm interested.

If the human civilization comes to an end because our sun went supernova, and we didn't make the technological progress necessary to travel outside of our solar system by then. We'd deserve to go extinct.
