What the hell is it about this guy that people flock to watch his movies?

Let me be brief.

This man's entire career comes down to two movies. Two.

Aliens (the 1st one only)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day

That's it. At least in terms of GREATNESS.

Everything else he's ever directed has one one big budget overrated piece of shyt after another.

Terminator 1? Yeah it's good. But it's clearly not in that elite tier. Like if you looked at Scorcese's catalog, it wouldn't be Goodfellas. It would be Cape Fear. Like, yeah people have seen it. It's good. But nobody really goes back and gives a shyt. That's what The Terminator is.

Titanic? Avatar? Honestly, I can't understand the big deal. Popular. Insanely profitable. Crap.
I suppose you could make an argument for The Abyss but be honest with yourself. Nobody has watched that movie. If you say you did, you're lying. Or maybe you were forced to by a substitute science teacher in middle school.

I hate the phrase “overrated”

It’s such a cop out

If everyone very clearly love something, and you’re apart of a very small vocal minority that doesn’t… that says more about your opinion on that thing then it does the thing in question

I wouldn’t say overrated. Just made nothing memorable for several decades. Unless pretty images are memorable to you (ie avatar, no memorable characters or story just cool pictures that you won’t watch again once it’s out of theaters).

i think its because he deals with some of the biggest budgets in CGI and people gravitate to see what he could pull off with it. Its kinda like "go big or go home" perspective to filmmaking and when you produce expansive films (kinda like Avatar) people get excited to see how lifelike it can be. Chances are avengers and next gen gaming fans are also also fans of James Cameron's work.

A lot of people love Cardi B.
I rest my case.
