Spotify CEO Daniel Ek released a public statement defending the platform’s need to balance the creative freedom of their content creators with user safety. Ek announced the release of Spotify’s publishing rules on their website, noting that “we are working to add a content advisory to any podcast episode that includes a discussion about Covid-19.”

“This advisory will direct listeners to our dedicated COVID-19 Hub, a resource that provides easy access to data-driven facts, up-to-date information as shared by scientists, physicians, academics and public health authorities around the world, as well as links to trusted sources,” the announcement says. “This new effort to combat misinformation will roll out to countries around the world in the coming days. To our knowledge, this content advisory is the first of its kind by a major podcast platform.”

Neil Young Demands Spotify Remove His Music Over ‘False Information About Vaccines’

“They can have [Joe] Rogan or Young,” Neil Young wrote in a letter to his manager and label. “Not both”

Neil Young has posted an open letter to his management team and record label demanding that they remove his music from Spotify. “I am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines – potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them,” he writes. “Please act on this immediately today and keep me informed of the time schedule.”

“I want you to let Spotify know immediately TODAY that I want all my music off their platform,” he continues. “They can have [Joe] Rogan or Young. Not both.” Young is referencing the steady stream of misinformation about vaccines that Joe Rogan has peddled on The Joe Rogan Experience. Last month, 270 doctors, physicians, and science educators signed an open letter asking Spotify to stop spreading Rogan’s baseless claims.

“With an estimated 11 million listeners per episode, JRE, which is hosted exclusively on Spotify, is the world’s largest podcast and has tremendous influence,” the letter reads. “Spotify has a responsibility to mitigate the spread of misinformation on its platform, though the company presently has no misinformation policy.”

Young removed most of his music from Spotify several years ago because he felt the sound quality on the service was too low, but he ultimately relented. “That’s where people get music,” he told Rolling Stone in 2019. “I want people to hear my music no matter what they have to get through to do it. I’m just trying to make it so they hear a lot more and enjoy it a lot more, but sell it for the same price because music is music.”

Young’s letter was addressed to his manager Frank Gironda and Tom Corson, the co-chairman and chief operating officer of Warner Bros. At press time, Spotify hadn’t responded to a request from Rolling Stone asking if they planned to remove Young’s music. It’s still available, but it might be smart to listen to Zuma and Rust Never Sleeps while you still can. They could disappear at any moment.

Neil Young knows the deal with these Record Executives

35 Years Ago: Neil Young is Sued for Not Sounding Like Neil Young

On Dec. 1, 1983, Neil Young was served with papers from his then label, Geffen Records. The suit charged Young with recording “unrepresentative” and "uncharacteristic" albums, essentially arguing that Neil Young no longer sounded like Neil Young.

Reviews for Everybody's Rockin' were harsh, with the Village Voice proclaiming "The covers are redundant or worse, as are all but two of the originals." Geffen was once again disappointed. Young claims he expected their negative response. "When I made albums like Everybody's Rockin' and everyone takes the shyt out of 'em... I knew they could do that. What am I? Stupid? Did people really think I put that out thinking it was the greatest fukkin' thing I'd ever recorded? Obviously I'm aware it's not. Plus it was a way of further destroying what I'd already set up."
