upvote / downvote system?

I know this topic came up when "daps" were first introduced, but I think it was primarily for stat value (ie. post / dap ratio).

This, however, would be something similar to reddit, except we already have daps for upvotes. I think youtube may have a system similar to this, too.

So I guess I'm wondering, would it be possible to have a negative "dap"? You could even call it "neg", since the vocabulary is already incredibly popular on here.

The purpose of this would be to allow the community a chance to govern the trolls, but not for "stat" value. I think, reputation does that enough. However, being in the red doesnt do much but remind us that a poster is a shytty poster.

The way it would work is, every so many "negs" (maybe 5?) would put the bad posters post into a spoiler, hiding the comment from other posters view. Almost as a punishment for posting something the community doesnt find useful to the threads conversation.

Other posters would still be allowed to access the bad posters post, but the default after being "negged" should be spoiler'd.

We're most likely not going to invest in any development of new features until the next version of our software is released. Right now we're on version 1.4.2 To put that in perspective..we started at 1.2.0 When the second number changes its called a second point release (1.2 to 1.3) and this is when you see new features that have been added to the core software. When you get a first point release ie. 2.0 it means the software is basically rewritten from the ground up. The company behind our software has announced that its now developing 2.0 and that 1.4 will be the last entry in the 1.0 series. With a complete rewrite of the software it means that most of our aftermarket features will have to be rewritten. So theres no sense of starting anything new at this point.

With that being said, I like the up and down vote system. There's a lot of question and answer sites that have something like that and like you mentioned...reddit. It makes getting to the most valuable content extremely easy. It's something that has been requested and talked about immensely by other forum admins. Hopefully it either comes standard with version 2.0 or atleast easier to add once they lay the new framework. With how things are currently coded, you're talking about atleast a thousand dollars to have it done properly.

my vision for how i'd like it to work if we were able to get something is an option to enable a special mode where you could view threads like how reddit works with posts being voted up and voted down
