Damn near every black athlete at UT just tweeted this letter out. The demands are on the second page. They want the "Eyes of Texas" replaced, buildings/statues renamed/removed, more outreach programs to inner-city DFW/Houston, UT athletic department to donate .5% of yearly earnings to black orgs/BLM, and a few more demands all addressed by the start of the Fall semester or else NO MORE donor/recruiting events.:wow:

Racist history of the "Eyes of Texas"...

One of these traditions is the iconic school song, “The Eyes of Texas.” The song is rooted in minstrelsy and anti-black sentiment, and UT should make an effort to be more forthcoming about its history by offering presentations at orientation. Offering historical presentations grants students the right to make decisions for themselves about whether or not they want to propagate the traditions.

“The Eyes of Texas” was first performed by a UT student named John Sinclair in 1903. Sinclair was also a member of the Varsity Minstrel Show, a type of performance that typified post-Reconstruction racism. These shows perpetuated the notion that African Americans were lesser than whites, with white performers painting their faces and bodies black and acting in a manner intended to mock African Americans.

The song’s centrality to student life necessitates student’s understanding of its history. It represents how our country’s dark history of exclusion isn’t so far behind us, which has the capacity to make some students feel marginalized or uncomfortable.

:mjlol: What? They think ending donor/recruiting events is a demand?

Them Northwestern boys told you to unionize

Them Missouri boys told you to walk out on the team

Those are the only 2 actual power moves student athletes have within a collegiate white supremacist institution.

Recruiting is the lifeblood of CFB. There is a multi-million dollar industry built around it and following these kids from the time they're 14 yrs old. If that gets disrupted in anyway, there is going to be major anxiety amongst the coaches. This is a very strong stance they're taking. Particularly regarding the changing of the school song (cacs are going crazy over this) and the demands to cut the check. Idk about you but I'm proud of these brothers.

Sir, how can you threaten to end recruiting events while still playing games that attract recruits?

What attracts recruits and increases undergraduate enrollment more than a successful, winning football program?

You're not changing building names or removing confederate statues without students on campus willing to put their bodies on the line and careers in jeopardy (see UNC and the Silent Sam debacle). They'll give you a black athlete history exhibit for peanuts. It means nothing to them because they'll ensure the message it conveys is one of unity between white and blacks.

If the athletes are truly "in this together" then they can unionize. Put it up to a vote. If you can't even unionize.......

The University of Wisconsin is the center of resistance against conservatism and republicans in the state of Wisconsin, to my knowledge they don't have any buildings named after slave owners, no slave songs, and they still can't break 3% in black student enrollment. At Penn State we literally named our most visited building after a black communist and we still have to deal with the same shyt as Texas students. The Maryland state flag, which is worn by UMD, is an homage to a slave owner.

Why doesn't anyone ask those who fought this fight what real change looks like?
