he may never admit it, but he tried to take Roman down the John Cena route WAY too quickly and it backfired.

Dude was over as hell as the man of few words bad-ass of the Shield. The crowd loved him maybe more than any other Shield member in matches. Shoulda pushed him to the title as he was....coulda been a Goldberg-ish character. His character didn't need any "color" at that time. If you wanted a REAL babyface against Lesnar, THAT Roman Reigns would've been your guy.

But Vince in his infinite wisdom wanted to do a complete 180 with his character, much like he did with Cena after he won the WWE title. Vince felt 'Rapping Cena' probably had a ceiling, so he changed him, literally overnight, into the character he is now. Which ultimately is why ppl started booing him every week some 10 years ago. Those boo's still exist today from ppl who remember what Cena once was.

But instead of letting Roman get some traction, he immediately changed him into some lighthearted, jokey, "sufferin succotash" :what: character and ppl who liked him before, immediately turned on him.

Look at his character from the Royal Rumble 2014 and compare it to now. Yeah, Vince

It's always been this way. He has basically one idea of what a top babyface should be, with a few exceptions like Austin. They might need Vince Russo back brother.

Same thing happened with Rock. The fans were starting to turn on him towards the end. He would still be an a$$hole at times, but in really corny ways. Diesel also. 96 Disel was over, 98 Nash was very over, but they had him as another Cena on top.

I agree.

But I think fans turned on Rock mostly because he was in & out too much.

I think Vince allowed Austin to happen b/c WWE was in financial shambles back then, he saw the fan reaction and couldn't afford to ignore it. But rest assured, Vince would take the credit for Austins' success as much as he would Hogan's. Therefore, he thinks he can do whatever and it'll get over with fans.

They turned on the Rock because they knew he was bigger than Austin and that was their way of going against the grain. There was no one doing better promos or carrying the WWF during than Rock..not Austin..not Angle..none of them. What do trailer trash white boys know of what's "corny".
