Russo Rants on This Week's RAW, WWE's TV Ratings and Something McMahon Once Told Him

- Vince Russo has a new blog on his official website titled, "Stop The Bull: The ‘REAL’ Reason Behind The RAW Ratings." Here's part of what Russo wrote:

"But HERE is where the problem with the WWE and its current ratings lie.

Moments after the baby bull was decapitated from behind, John Cena was in the middle of the ring telling Bray Wyatt, “Payback is a B***H!”. Whoa—now wait a minute. If I brought little Johnny, and he came to see the baby bull—what do I do now? Do I cover his ears? Do I up and leave? Do I never come back to see another WWE event live? Do I stop watching the show all together? What do I do with this BLATANT MIXED MESSAGE THAT WAS JUST THROWN MY WAY?!!!

“You can’t be half pregnant”.

Vince McMahon said that to me many, many years ago, and it has become my #1 rule when scripting wrestling. What Vince meant was that when you make the decision to do something—YOU GO ALL THE WAY WITH IT! So, the WWE made the decision to go family friendly—they told us all–however, the problem is that they’re not going all the way with it—-they are BEING HALF PREGNANT. Is this because in reality they, themselves as a company, haven’t bought 100% into it, and are just trying to “appease” the board, or, are there other reasons simply steaming from greediness?

Could the reason they haven’t committed one way, or the other, be this simple—from a philosophic point of view—the WWE is trying to capture EVERYONE!? Whereas networks these days are going for the demo P (people) 18-49, the WWE is going for P 5-65. In other words—in typical Vince fashion—they want it ALL!!! And, in theory, there is nothing wrong with that—it’s how Vince made all that money. Go for it all—and leave nothing behind. But that’s only in “theory”.

Back in 2002, I almost went back to the WWE because I took it personally that, within the matter of a little over a two-year span, their ratings had split in half from the time that I had left–they had fallen below a 3.0. Today–a DOZEN years later—the ratings are still where they were then. When it comes to eyeballs on TVs every Monday night—half of the people are watching now, compared to when the “Attitude Era” was in full stride. Yeah—they’ll fling every excuse at you. Primarily—the television landscape has changed with the internet, iphones, ipads, whatever–OK, good argument. HOWEVER–if that were the case, then why hasn’t the NFL lost half its audience in the last 12 years? They’re on TV, right? Other ways to watch their product are out there—just like in the WWE’s case.

No–that’s a BS excuse. We saw within a five-minute span on “Raw” last night why the ratings are HALF of what they used to be. In attempting to obtain ALL—the WWE has literally alienated, or “turned off” half their audience in the process. Don’t believe me—see what the IWS community has to say about last night’s “Raw” today. Yeah—they loved the Shield brawling with Evolution at the end—but, the baby bull—not so much. And what about the “families”? Oh, yeah, that bull thing was “cute”, but John Cena swearing—not so much. Now, if you keep doing this week in, and week out, the things you “don’t like” will eventually start to build, or add up—until all of a sudden—it’s OK if we miss “Raw” this week. Well, this week turns into next week, and the next week—until they’re not watching anymore.

By trying to be “all things to all people”–which they can’t be—nobody can–the WWE has shot themselves in the boot. For every kid they are gaining, they are losing an adult, and for every adult they are gaining—they are losing a kid. It a switch-off, an exchange, a vicious cycle."

I always find it corny when Cena swears it seems so forced like he's trying too hard to get a reaction from the crowd :manny:

Ya know, Russo's right.

The night after Mania, I really thought they were on like a muhfukka. Because damn near every segment that night was quality. It put people where they needed to be, and even signified that a lot of the guys who've been just hangin' around for the last few years might not necessarily be that prominent anymore.

But since then we've had an increased Diva presence that hasn't exactly been all worth watching... we have an ongoing feud between Hornswoggle and El Torito which started off kinda funny on some 3-min. segment shyt, but is now getting cornier by the week...

Now to their credit, the lower and mid card dudes are getting some air time... but a lot of Raw lately has been filler. shyt nobody's really into, Del Rio jobbing to everybody, Rusev beating everybody, Adam Rose and Swagger feuding for nothing, Santino/Emma/Fandango/Layla for weeks, Summer Rae & Layla feuding over Fandango, etc., etc. And it seems like they're trying to appeal to everybody with some of this stuff. But the people who'd love the Diva stuff probably ain't checking for the El Torito/Hornswoggle shyt, and whoever's into that probably ain't stayin' up to 11. It's just a clusterfukk on that show every week for the last month or so.

its a 3hour show for bout raw and smackdown and you have WWE network. So why not just have kid friendly version of raw and smackdown for the first hour and let it come back to the adults for the last two. Also let the network broadcast pg era segments etc.

Lmao

So he believes wwe is in trouble because cena showed TOO MUCH charactor and personality

Russo gonna russo

No, he saying Cena is corny and tells terrible jokes one week and he is cursing and being intense one week. Either be one or the other, it shows lack of focus and good storytelling on WWE's part when it comes to booking Cena's character

"Our show is catered to 10 year olds- John Cena during one of his anti Rock rants in 2012 disguised as a promo. No, John. Your audience is 18-30 males mostly. Alienate them nyggas? It's game over.

Russo actually addressed the elephant in the room tbh . Jr and Austin and Jericho and bischoff hhh etc will say how it was in the old school days and decry tweeners or mixed reactions for say the Wyatt's but cena is the biggest culprit yet they never bring it up . Either he's a tougher bo Dallas or he's a cool edgy face aka rock/ mankind but being both is :camby: and being a 2000s hogan is even worse since that got booed back in the 90s :heh: they need to stop the bullshytting and admit that if your top face ( face of the company ) is getting those reactions something is wrong. You can't really build a good heel vs cena because inevitably the heel gets cheered !!! ( even boring ass del rio !!) and the fact that cena hasn't turned due to merchandise /make a wish shyt as if a top face pushed like cena couldn't do the same shyt . Maybe Vince isn't as smart as we think or times passed him by . It took a bunch of random shyt happening to bring about the attitude era like losing Brett and screwing him , I mean think what happened if Brett does the job that night ! We get no mr McMahon character and who knows what happens if Eric had got the investors to buy wcw maybe in the long run his approach of younger , different stars would of had a similar effect to wcw as it did in wwe.

Lol so true . All these guys from that time period are full of themselves and delusional usually they don't get that they were part of the blame for the end of the boom period in wrestling . They brought in the boom and help stop it with bad booking and everyone being out for themselves . The world has evolved back in the day a big roid head looking mutha or barrel chested cigarette smoking bad ass was the definition of a tough guy to those generations, now we see boxing we see mma and see smaller athletic guys are just as bad ass . Cain Velasquez or Anderson silva don't have to look like john cena
