My great grandfather was born in 1887 his was around his teens-20s 1910. Let that simmer.
Folks who were enslaved in their childhood years were still around.
Emancipation proclamation was not a clean cut and dry end to slavery. If that was the case tons of black families/ people would have showed up in 1870 census but many are not even recognized still.slavery ended in 1865 unless he's afro-Brazilian ??
