I grew up thinking VA was a state of light skin people because so many half breeds around me at the time had roots in VA
I had this discussion with someone from the DMV and they confirmed it was a thing back in the day and added some historical context (which I can't remember)
Not half breeds, just a lot of fair skinned black people. Most of coastal Virginia is a patchwork of former plantations. I know the exact plantations my people were enslaved on, on both sides of the family.
With that, you have descendants of mixed ancestors everywhere.
